Welcome to the 23/24 concert season

Philharmonia Zürich, Orchestra La Scintilla, Ensemble Opera Nova

The 2023/24 season’s Philharmonische Konzerte combine greats from the symphonic repertoire with unusual artist encounters, surprising forays into the repertoire, and world-class soloists. The interpretive heart of the series is General Music Director Gianandrea Noseda, who will himself conduct the Philharmonia Zürich in three of the seven concerts.

To mark the 150th anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninoff's birth, we will continue our artistic exchange with the Tonhalle Orchestra in November: Gianandrea Noseda will conduct the Tonhalle Orchestra, Paavo Järvi the Philharmonia Zürich.
Both concerts feature Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi: one with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 4, which he composed in exile in America, the other with Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, which he wrote at the Villa Senar on Lake Lucerne.

In the fourth Philharmonisches Konzert we look forward to presenting another internationally-active Swiss artist at the Opernhaus for the first time: cellist Sol Gabetta joins conductor Krzysztof Urbański for Witold Lutosławski’s Cello Concerto. Also returning to the Opernhaus are renowned violinist Augustin Hadelich with Antonín Dvořák's Violin Concerto and star soprano Diana Damrau with songs and opera scenes by Richard Strauss.

A special highlight in the Orchestra La Scintilla series promises to be a concert of early 19th century compositions. Riccardo Minasi will conduct works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Wagner on period instruments with violinist Ilya Gringolts as soloist. In addition, Kristian Bezuidenhout, one of the world's most exceptional pianists on period keyboard instruments, will interpret piano concertos by Mozart, making up for a concert at the Opernhaus Zürich cancelled in 2021 due to quarantine restrictions.

In the 2023/24 season, the Philharmonia Zürich’s concert program continues to expand beyond symphonic concerts, as the orchestra’s myriad forms are presented in all their variety – from La Scintilla concerts of historically informed performance practice and the Opera-nova ensemble dedicated to contemporary music all the way to the most diverse chamber music formations, presented in 11 brunch/lunch concerts.
