Der Ring des Nibelungen
Der Ring des Nibelungen
A new «Ring» for Zurich
The fall 2023 premiere of Götterdämmerung brought its completion – the new Zurich Ring des Nibelungen under the musical direction of General Music Director Gianandrea Noseda in a production by Intendant and Stage Director Andreas Homoki. Back to the origin is one of the leitmotifs of Andreas Homoki’s overall concept for this monumental work, which tells of nothing less than the creation and demise of a world. At the same time, the Ring des Nibelungen is also a family story about Wotan, the father of the gods, and his struggle to keep and break treaties, about freedom and lack thereof, and his desperate efforts to stop the downfall he himself is responsible for. Andreas Homoki’s production brings the characters of the Ring, the gods, humans and mythical creatures, very close to us and makes the motivations and relationships of the characters to each other comprehensible in precise character drawing.
In spring 2024 we will present all four parts of Richard Wagner’s grand Weltdeutungsmythos – as a cycle in a short chronological presentation of the four works, as intended by the composer. This cyclical performance of the complete Ring now makes it possible to follow these extremely complex scenic and musical developments, the densely woven web of musical and narrative motifs over the course of all four evenings. This is particularly exciting not least because in our new production the characters in all four parts are embodied by the same singers – Tomasz Konieczny is Wotan, Camilla Nylund Brünnhilde, Christopher Purves Alberich, Wolfgang Ablinger Sperrhacke Mime and Klaus Florian Vogt Siegfried.

Musical quotations from Richard Wagner’s operas can be found in an endless series of Hollywood films. But it's hard to exaggerate Richard Wagner's influence on film music as a whole, too, if we think of his orchestral sound and his work with leitmotifs. In this video installation, Swiss video artist Ruth Stofer traces Richard Wagner’s music in cinema. Using countless excerpts from films that use Wagner's music, she creates a kaleidoscope of the most diverse film quotations, allowing us to experience the interaction of sound and image anew.

Wagner’s Monumental Work as Live Streaming
Experiencing the Ring des Nibelungen as a cyclical performance is an extraordinary event for both a theatre and its audience. We will do this twice next May, just over 2000 people will do it with us.
The interest in our interpretation of Richard Wagner's grand Weltdeutungsmythos is many times greater. We are a small house and the tickets were sold out in no time. For this reason, we are particularly pleased to be able to offer the second cycle with a first-class cast as streaming to those at home. On four evenings in May, the performance will be broadcast live from the opera house to this website and will be available free of charge as video-on-demand for a month afterwards.

Light show celebrating a new «Ring» for Zürich
With an audiovisual light spectacle, the opera house not only celebrated the creation of a new Ring des Nibelungen on stage, but also allowed the entire city population to participate. The 10-minute light shows for Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung each flickered across the façade of the opera house a few days before the corresponding opera premiere.
